02.06.14Jo Lawry to join Sting and Paul Simon for US/Canada tour

I'm so excited to be out on the road again, this time with not just one of my heroes, but TWO! I'll be joining Sting and Paul Simon on their North American tour: twenty-one shows, two of the world's greatest singer-songwriters, their two terrific bands melded into one fantastic musical extravaganza. And yes, I have bruises from pinching myself repeatedly!

12.01.13Celebrate the holidays at SubCulture

Laila Biali, Gregg Keillor and I lead SubCulture's holiday "house band" for 11 special shows with 11 special guests these holidays.

09.01.13"The Last Ship" sets sail!

This project has been in the works for a couple of years now, and I feel so privileged to have been a part of it from the very beginning. It has been incredible to see the story and songs take shape, and I couldn't be more excited to see it set sail this month. The album drops on September 24, and we're celebrating with ten intimate shows at The New York Public Theater. Come aboard!

05.08.13Once more into the breach...

Wow, you guys really like this tour, huh? Very happy to be heading out again with the "Back to Bass" cast and crew for some US and European touring this summer. "A week in Paris will ease the bite of it..."

03.20.13It's album-making time!

Psyched to be heading into the studio later this month to start tracking for the upcoming record. Which of the 16 songs will make it onto the album? Organ or accordion on that weird odd-time tune? Electric or acoustic on that sad one? How many percussion instruments can Dan Rieser invent/MacGyver in four days of tracking? What snacks will I bring? All these questions will be answered and more...

01.01.13Tickets almost sold out for Jo Lawry at The Space Theater

Looking forward to my first home-town gig in a while. Apparently tickets are nearly sold-out! (Thanks, Mum and Dad.) Can't wait to play a whole heap of new original songs, soon to be recorded. Grab one of the last remaining seats while you can, I'd love to see you there!

11.01.12The gig that keeps on giving...

Yep, we're heading back to Europe! And after that, Asia! And after that, I get to spend a hot and sunny Christmas at home in Australia! Yippeeeee!

06.01.12Back to Bass? Back to Europe!

Well, I guess people liked it... we're heading back to Europe this summer for round two of the Sting's "Back to Bass" tour. Looking forward to my first time visiting Ibiza, Umbria, Riga, Zagreb, Odense...

05.01.12Jo Lawry to open for Suzanne Vega in the UK

I'm very excited to be opening for one of my favorite singer-songwriters, Suzanne Vega, in the UK later this month. A gig at the Minack theater, a spectacular amphitheater on the wild cliffs of Penzance in Cornwall? Yes, please! Other shows too... check out Suzanne's website for details.

01.15.12"Back to Bass" heads to Europe

We're taking Sting's "Back to Bass" tour across the Atlantic this winter! This time with Dominic Miller, Vinnie Colaiuta, David Sancious and Peter Tickell. Hope to see you out there!

01.26.11Best Australia Day Ever

The Sting tour hit Australia this January, and January 26 found me performing with my boss at a winery in the Barossa Valley, just outside my home town of Adelaide, South Australia. Add a front row entirely populated by my family and friends, and you have the BEST AUSTRALIA DAY EVER. (Next week playing four nights at The Sydney Opera House won't be too shabby, either!)

02.23.10Jo on tour with Sting in 2010

Sting will embark on a world tour this summer, accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and a quartet featuring Jo Lawry, longtime guitarist Dominic Miller, bassist Ira Coleman and percussionist David Cossin. The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra will be conducted by Maestro Steven Mercurio (Pavarotti, Bocelli).

Jo is also featured on the new Sting album, "Symphonicities," available at Amazon and iTunes.

12.17.09Jo is featured on Sting's new DVD, "A Winter's Night... Live from Durham Cathedral"

Jo is thrilled to be performing with Sting as part of this project, beginning with the taping of the DVD in the UK, followed by performances in New York (at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine) and in Europe. Jo sings background vocals, plays violin, and performs a duet with Sting on his beautiful song, "Ghost Story."

09.15.09Downbeat review: "I Want to Be Happy" receives 4.5 stars!

Petite Aussie Jo Lawry’s modest voice houses wondrous jazz chops and wiry curiosity; she winnows pizzazz out of stuff new (Sting’s “Until”) and old (“I’m Old Fashioned”). She floats over raw samba on “I Could’ve Danced All Night” (pandeiro duo) and a frenzied “Loro,” and nails “I Only Have Eyes For You” to the sky with a cosmic “millions of people pass by.” Brimming with gleeful adventure and inner glow, Lawry freshly reimagines tunes that conjure Dominique Eade’s exploratory dynamics (scat-wise “In A Spin”), Carmen McRae’s fearless eclecticism (tabla-tinged “Can’t Smile Without You”) and her own intuitive narrative gift (Dar Williams’ nuanced “February”).

02.26.09Some great recent press!

“I Want to Be Happy” (Fleurieu) is the fine new debut from Ms. Lawry, an Australian jazz singer with a springlike tone, a nimble technique and a grasp of shading and pacing." Nate Chinen, New York Times

"If you’re familiar with Australian transplant Jo Lawry, you won’t need our urging to attend tonight’s celebration for her debut CD, I Want to Be Happy. If you haven’t heard her yet, you’re in for a treat: Start to finish, the disc demonstrates why Lawry is one of the most impressive vocalists to emerge in some years. Listen as she slyly drops a few licks from “Tico Tico” into a high-flying “I Could Have Danced All Night,” and you’ll know that Lawry will captivate the cognoscenti. But her wide-ranging taste in material is sure to win even more fans; it takes a special artist to redeem the likes of “I Can’t Smile Without You.” - Time Out New York

"Vibraphonist James Shipp pursues his fascination with Celtic sounds into a new project, Nós Novo, the lineup of which boasts two mandolins, a melodica, the obligatory bodhran(an Irish frame drum) and two singers. One of those vocalists, we hasten to add, is young Australian sensation Jo Lawry, the discovery of whom has had us in something of a lather just lately. Bonus!" - Time Out New York
